This past Sunday, students explored the history of Islam and Muslims in America, dating from the 18th century transatlantic slave trade until our contemporary context. A timeline with significant events in that history were presented and students were asked to relate their own personal experiences to the timeline. One student told the group how her great grandfather was part of small wave of Muslim immigrants who were received at Ellis Island in New York. Another student related how her family knew Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress, in Minnesota. Nearly half a dozen students, who are actively involved in their high school Muslim Student Associations were surprised to find out that the MSA was first established in 1963. The session concluded with an overview of the impact of post-9/11 policies domestically and abroad.
